Apr 27, 2024

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 27, 2024) – The Washington State women's rowing team wrapped up the weekend at the Lake Wheeler Invitational with a ninth-place finish among the 18-team field Saturday morning. Tennessee won the event, followed by Duke in second place and UCF in third.

The Cougs took home second place in the varsity eight race on day two to go along with fifth and two sixth-place finishes. It was a strong showing for the varsity eight squad this weekend after they recorded a first-place finish in the V8 race on Friday.

"The V8 was really clicking on all cylinders this weekend," said Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "I'm very proud of their efforts, and we're looking forward to getting back to work next week."

In Saturday's V8 race, the Cougars placed second with a time of 6:40.258. The Cougs were at the top of the pack for the entire race and kept the bottom four teams behind them until the end. The final five boats were within seven seconds of each other when the race finished. Tennessee won the race with a time of 6:26.432

Washington State started their Saturday morning with a fifth-place finish and a time of 7:55.942 in the 2V4. The Cougs were close with Miami and Alabama through the first 750 meters of the race, but with 500 meters to go, all five boats had pretty much solidified their places with the Cougs finishing in fifth. Tennessee won the race with a time of 7:25.092.

In the varsity four race, the Cougs finished sixth with a time of 7:42.329. Through 1,000 meters, the race for second was close between five of the crews. The Cougs pushed hard at the end but ended up in sixth as Tennessee won the race with a time of 7:10.435.

Washington State's second varsity eight crew finished in sixth place with a time of 6:59.748. The battle for third was between Washington State, Iowa, Alabama, and BU through 1,000 meters. The Cougs stayed close with the pack the entire race but fell short at the end. Tennessee won the race with a time of 6:29.500.

Washington State will continue its season on Sunday, May 19 at the Pac-12 Championship at Lake Natoma in Gold River, California.
