Arizona Downs ASU, 5-3, in Phoenix

May 7, 2024

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Led by three home runs and a slew of shutdown relief pitching, the No. 17 Arizona Wildcats (30-17) went into Phoenix and left with a 5-3 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils (26-24) on Tuesday night.

Left fielder TJ Adams, shortstop Mason White, and designated hitter Andrew Cain all left the yard for Arizona, accounting for four of the Wildcats five runs on the night. For Adams, who opened the scoring with his solo blast in the third inning, it was his first career home run.

On a bullpen day the Wildcats used nine pitchers to cover all nine innings, six of whom tossed scoreless outings. Right-hander Casey Hintz (3-1) earned the win after entering in fourth and getting the Wildcats out of a bases-loaded jam on a double play with his first pitch. He would escape again in the fifth on a second double play.

Fellow righty Anthony Susac closed the game out in the ninth, earning his second save of the season.

The midweek victory gave Arizona four consecutive wins heading into their crucial Pac-12 series in Salt Lake City this weekend.
