Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Weekly Rundown - April 30, 2024

Three teams enter the postseason ranked in the IWLCA Top-25: No. 19 Stanford, No. 21 USC and No. 24 Colorado.

The LA Memorial Coliseum is home to the Pac-12 Tournament, which is set to take place from May 1-4. All five contests will air on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Now, with Troy Clardy and Kara Lentz on the call all tournament long. A full schedule can be found below and at Pac-12.com.

​​USC is eyeing its second consecutive, and third overall, Pac-12 Tournament title. The Trojans defeated Colorado, 12-3 in 2019 before beating the Buffaloes, 12-6 in 2023. Stanford holds three tournament crowns, with victories in 2018 (15-6 vs. Colorado), 2021 (17-10 vs. Colorado) and in 2022 (18-12 vs. Arizona State).

The Pac-12’s All-Conference awards were announced on Tuesday. USC’s Ella Heaney was selected as Attacker of the Year, while Oregon’s Morgan McCarthy earned Midfielder of the Year honors. Regular-season champion Stanford won the rest of the yearly awards, with Madison McPherson named the Defensive Player of the Year, Annabel Frist voted the Draw Specialist of the Year, Aliya Polisky tabbed the Freshman of the Year, Lucy Pearson named the Goalkeeper of the Year and Danielle Spencer selected as the Coach of the Year.

Around the League

  • NCAA DI RPI (through games 4/29): No. 16 Stanford, No. 24 USC, No. 26 Colorado, No. 47 Arizona State, No. 55 UC Davis, No. 70 Oregon, No. 87 California, No. 93 San Diego State.
  • Stanford won its second outright, and third overall, regular-season Pac-12 title this past Saturday. The Cardinal went a perfect 7-0 in Pac-12 play for the second time ever (also 2021). Stanford went on to win the Pac-12 Tournament that season.
  • The Sun Devils tied their season high with 21 goals in the regular-season finale to clinch the No. 4 seed at the Pac-12 Tournament. Mina Scott had six goals and eight points, and Zoe Mazur had 12 draw controls and five ground balls in the victory, and both players earned Pac-12 Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.
  • The Cardinal rank in the top-10 nationally in a variety of statistical categories:
    • Caused turnovers per game - 7th, 10.80
    • Ground balls per game - 4th, 22.40
    • Scoring margin - 9th, 6.87
    • Save percentage - 10th, .497
    • Scoring defense - 10th, 8.40
    • Shots per game - 1st, 37.60
    • Shots on goal per game - 5th, 26.07
  • USC put together its third-straight double-digit win season, going 12-4 on the year.
    • Three of USC’s losses came against IWLCA top-20 teams.
  • The Trojans are 7-3 all-time in the Coliseum. USC played two regular-season games at the Coliseum this season, going 2-0 in those contests.
    • Prior to this season there had been 8 USC games played at this venue all-time, including one NCAA Tournament game in 2016.
  • Oregon’s McCarthy is the only Pac-12 player and just one of eight players nationally with over 40 goals, 30 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers this season.
  • Colorado has reached the Pac-12 Tournament Championship game in four out of five chances.
  • USC’s Kait Devir leads the Pac-12 and ranks eighth nationally in goals-against average at 8.50.
    • The senior has allowed 10 or fewer goals in eight straight contests.
  • Colorado’s Madeline Pisani leads the league with 56 goals this season (10 more than the next highest total), and her 3.50 goals per game ranks 23rd nationally. The midfielder has scored in every game this season for the Buffs.
  • Oregon enters the postseason averaging 13.64 goals per game, which is the third highest mark in the Pac-12.
    • The Ducks have scored 16 or more goals eight times this season, and are a perfect 8-0 in those contests.
  • The Aggies lead the Pac-12 in shot percentage (.479) and shots on goal percentage (.773). UC Davis is 4-1 this year when posting a shot percentage of .540 or better.
  • UC Davis (.589) and Arizona State (.583) rank sixth and seventh nationally, respectively, in free position percentage. The Sun Devils are 7-0 this season when scoring five or more goals from the free position. 
    • UC Davis' Grace Gebhardt leads the league with 16 free position goals, and Arizona State's Scott is third with 13.

This Week

  • No. 4 seed Arizona State takes on No. 5 seed Oregon on Wednesday, May 1 at 4:30 p.m. PT / 5:30 p.m. MT, with the winner set to face top-seeded Stanford on Thursday, May 2 at 4 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. MT.
    • The Ducks topped the Sun Devils, 20-12 on April 20 behind five goals each from McCarthy and Anna Simmons.
    • These two teams have squared off 10 times before, with Arizona State holding a 6-4 advantage. This will be the first neutral site contest between these two squads.
  • No. 3 seed Colorado battles No. 6 seed UC Davis on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. PT / 8:30 p.m. MT, with the winner moving on to face No. 2 seed USC on Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. MT.
    • The Buffaloes are the No. 3 seed for the second straight season. Colorado defeated UC Davis, 17-7 earlier this season to remain undefeated (7-0) all-time against the Aggies. Ashley Stokes and Pisani each scored six goals in the victory.
    • UC Davis makes the postseason in its first season in the Pac-12. The Aggies are paced by Gebhardt, who ranked second in the Conference with 46 goals this season.

Preseason Coaches Poll

  • USC was selected first in the 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse preseason coaches poll. The defending regular season and tournament champion garnered 48 total points and six first-place votes, while Stanford was picked to finish second with 44 points and two first-place selections. 

Returners & Additions

  • The Pac-12 returns 13 postseason All-Conference honorees from a season ago, including reigning Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year Claudia Shevitz, the 2023 Pac-12 Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Kait Devir, and Reigning Freshman of the Year Teagan NG.
  • The Conference welcomes seven standouts featured on ILWomen’s Class of 2023 Power 100 Incoming Freshmen Rankings: Stanford Aliya Polisky - No. 14, A, Stanford; Lindsey Devir - No. 16, M, Stanford; Ava Arceri - No. 24, M, Stanford; Shae Lembo - No. 32, G, Stanford; Anna Colpack - No. 54, M, Stanford; Ellie Johnson - No. 71, D, Stanford; Anna Regan - No. 86, M, USC.

2024 Pac-12 Tournament   

  • The 2024 Pac-12 Tournament is set for May 1-4 at the LA Memorial Coliseum. The event will consist of a six team, single-elimination tournament format, and the tournament field will be based on regular-season conference record. All five contests are slated to broadcast on Pac-12 Network and the Pac-12 Now app.
