CAREFREE, Ariz. - The host No. 3 ARIZONA STATE Sun Devils caught fire midway through the final round to pull away for a 16-shot team victory at the 2024 Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships at Desert Forest Golf Club on Sunday.

STANFORD senior Karl Vilips turned in a final round 3-under-par 68, highlighted by a clutch up-and-down par save from 85-yards out on the 18th, to claim medalist honors by a shot at 2-under 282 (68-75-71-68) for his first collegiate victory.

ASU improved its team score in each of the final three rounds of the Championships, culminating with Sunday's best of 3-under 352 to post a victorious 27-over 1447 total (368-365-362-352) for its first Conference crown since 2008 and 13th in program history - second-most in league annals behind USC's 20.

The title also is the fourth for ASU head coach Matt Thurmond, who previously hoisted the hardware three times at Washington (2005, 2009-10) - his four titles are fifth-most in Conference history.

The Sun Devils' three-shot advantage entering the final round all but disappeared following a 10-over start through seven holes. Fueled by eventual runner-up senior Ryggs Johnston's four consecutive birdies on No. 8-11 and junior Preston Summerhays' 5-under 66, ASU played the final 11 holes in 13-under to turn the team title chase into a rout in front of its local fans.

Vilips had to wait out the final six groups after his clutch save on No. 18 gave him the clubhouse lead. Johnston and Sun Devil freshman Wenyi Ding kept Vilips active on the range, but Johnston narrowly missed a tying birdie attempt on the 18th and Ding - who tied for the lead with a birdie on No. 15 - carded a pair of triple bogeys on No. 16 and 18 to finish six shots back.

It marks the third consecutive year, fourth time in the past six tournaments, and 19th time in 64 all-time events that the host emerged with the team crown.

Vilips is the 12th different individual Conference champion from Stanford, joining the likes of teammate Michael Thorbjornsen (2023), Maverick McNealy (2015), Patrick Rodgers (2014) and Tiger Woods (1996).

Desert Forest posed a stern test to the 12-team and 72-player field - the winning team score was the highest at the Championships since 1986 and medalist score the highest since 1994.

Pac-12 teams now turn their attention to postseason competition which will begin with NCAA Regional play May 13-15 followed by the NCAA Championships hosted by Texas at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., May 24-29. The NCAA Selection Show will air on GOLF Channel on Wednesday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. PT.
