Beavers Score Seven In Ninth But Rally Falls Just Short

May 4, 2024

PULLMAN, Wash. – Gavin Turley and Elijah Hainline each hit home runs and No. 6 Oregon State rallied with a seven-run ninth inning but came up just short in a 10-9 loss to Washington State Saturday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Hainline hit a three-run home run to make it a one-run ballgame in the ninth, but Kaden Wickersham retired the game's final two batters to stem the Oregon State (34-12 overall, 13-9 Pac-12 Conference) rally.

The Beavers saw Micah McDowell drive in one on a double and then Gavin Turley two on another double for his third and fourth RBI of the night. That led to Hainline's 10th home run of the season.

Turley also recorded a sacrifice fly in the first inning and his 14th home run of the season in the eighth.

All told, the Beavers recorded 12 hits on the night; Turley, Dallas Macias, Brady Kasper and Wilson Weber all recorded two.

Jacob Kmatz, making his 12th start of the season, worked five innings for the Beavers. The righty scattered eight hits and five runs while striking out seven. He took the loss and is 5-2 on the year.

Connor Wilford improved to 4-6 after getting the win for Washington State (20-25, 8-15). He held the Beavers to four hits and a run in 5 1/3 innings, striking out four while issuing five walks.
